Affordable Housing is Gaining the Focus

Last week in Delhi, CREDAI organized a two-day meeting on ‘Housing the game changer leading to double-digit GDP growth’. The primary focus of the meeting was affordable housing. The people who participated in the meeting agreed that even though affordable housing sector had witnessed a lot of progress in the past five years, however, still a lot more was required to be done in order to give an impetus to this segment of housing.

According to Lead, low-income housing practice at Monitor Deloitte, a management consulting business organization, he stated that there was a marked increase in demand for low-income housing. He added that there is presently a demand for 15 million homes. Apart from this, the demand for these homes comes from buyers with an income of ~10,000-25,000 per month.

He further went on to add that the answer to the demand for affordable housing was only to give water and electricity. Apart from this also build homes with clear title. He also added that the whole idea was to build small flats of 229 sq. ft. flat in space which would include no space wastage, thus costing around ~8 lakh.

According to Chairman, CREDAI, he stated that the real estate sector had not received a fair treatment from the government. And also added that the real estate sector’s contribution to GDP is 6.2%. Moreover, it employs over 1 crore people. Still despite this fact, the government had ignored this sector.

The BJP President, told real estate developers to forward a list of its requirements and demands to the party which can be included in the BJP’s LokSabha election manifesto. The President of the BJP stated that they will do their best for the sector.
